Why is it masculine?

Climat is masculine. It derives from Latin "clima" (from Greek "klima"), but the masculine gender is better explained by the fact that Latin "clima" was actually treated as a masculine noun in Latin itself (nominative singular: clima, despite the -a ending). When borrowed into Old French as a learned/scientific term, it retained this masculine gender. The -a ending did not trigger feminization because the word was perceived as masculine from its Latin source.

What is the French word for climate?

The French word for climate is le climat — masculine.
