However, the gender assignment is more complex than stated: while many Latin neuter nouns did become masculine in French, "insecte" actually became masculine largely through analogy with other -e ending nouns and the default masculine gender assignment in French, rather than a systematic rule. The Latin neuter ending -um did become -e in French, but this does not automatically explain masculine gender assignment.
